Drawing Attention to Teen Dating Violence Prevention in February

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAPM) ? a national effort to raise awareness about abuse in youth relationships and mobilize communities to
support young people in having safe and healthy relationships. Sadly, just as the month began, Myrna Umanzor, a 15 year old from San Leandro, California was murdered, allegedly by her 19 year old boyfriend, who took his own life the next day. The loss of life in San Leandro is another tragic wakeup call to communities across the state to strengthen efforts to prevent teen dating violence, also known as dating abuse.

What is dating abuse?

Dating abuse is
the use of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, or technological abuse by a person to harm, threaten, intimidate, or control a dating partner, regardless of whether that relationship is continuing or has concluded, or the number of interactions between the individuals involved. Abuse occurs in relationships among young people from all races, class backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities. Dating abuse is associated with a host of adverse outcomes, including truancy, use of alcohol and drugs, eating disorders, depression and suicide. Adolescents and young adults have the highest rates of intimate partner violence of any age group, with young women ages 16-24 at the highest rate for victimization.

Despite its prevalence, the distinctive aspects of dating abuse and harmful social norms (such as the notion that what happens in a relationship is no one else?s business) make it one of the most overlooked forms of violence. Many young victims do not recognize warning signs and confuse controlling behaviors as a sign of care. Fear and shame discourage victims from seeking help, and when they do, peers and adults often minimize the potential for harm, unaware of the danger of increasing frequency and severity of abuse over time, and the heightened risk for physical violence during or after a break up.

Talking about healthy relationships and dating abuse with youth

As adolescents begin to explore romantic relationships, they need caring adults who will help them disinguish between healthy, unhealthy and abusive behavior. They need adults who challenge harmful and restrictive gender norms, model healthy ways of addressing intense emotions and conflicts, and demonstrate respect in their various relationships with people from all races, genders, sexual orientations, gender identities and abilities.

Ongoing, open conversations with young people about healthy relationships are vitally important. These conversations should reinforce the importance of respecting boundaries and the right to be free from control from a dating partner. Conversations about healthy relationships should start early, and no later than middle school - the developmental time when many young people become interested in exploring romantic relationships. Adults should intervene early in warning sign behavior, and emphasize (and model) the importance of keeping ties with friends and caring adults when one is in a relationship. (Isolation from family and friends is a warning sign behavior.)

Young people who are being abused may not identify their experience as abuse. When speaking with adolescents who may be experiencing abuse, it?s important to be non-judgmental and empathetic, apply harm reduction principles, help to plan for safety, and have current information for referral agencies and community resources on hand. And remember, during and after a break-up is the most dangerous time when the likelihood of physical violence increases.

Pirate file-sharing goes 3D

LAST week saw the launch of a new category on The Pirate Bay, the controversial file-sharing site known for making copyright material freely available. Alongside music, films and e-books, the site offers "physibles" - digital objects that assume a physical form thanks to a 3D printer.

At the moment such printers are the domain of hobbyists, spitting out small plastic trinkets, but improvements in the technology mean more complex materials and shapes will soon be possible. Could The Pirate Bay's move open the door for a new wave of piracy as people scan objects using a 3D scanner and share them online?

The prospect may seem unlikely, but remember that MP3 players were a niche market until free music from the likes of Napster fuelled demand for the iPod. So perhaps file-sharing could do the same for 3D printers, bringing them into people's homes.

The music industry responded to illegal file-sharing with digital rights management (DRM) techniques that prevented a song from playing on an unauthorised device. Could companies that sell physical products do the same?

One option is placing a marker on objects that a 3D scanner could detect and which would stop it operating. In 2002 University of Cambridge computer scientist Markus Kuhn discovered this technique is already used to prevent banknotes from being photocopied, but he says it would not work for 3D scanners as pirates could simply cover the marker with tape.

He suggests borrowing an alternative method from music DRM. Some companies watermark their audio files by encoding copyright information in frequencies outside the range of human hearing, which are normally discarded by compression algorithms. Kuhn says the equivalent in physical objects is the mechanical tolerances used in manufacturing - one side of an object might be specified as 300 ? 1 millimetres, for example. A marking algorithm could etch a tiny pattern in the unused section that a scanner would detect.

Tony Rodriguez, who works for Oregon-based digital watermarking firm Digimarc says that valid 3D files could be marked by subtly altering the 3D design without changing the printed object. This would let a 3D printer distinguish between a manufacturer's file, which contains the alteration, and one made by scanning an object, which does not.

Perhaps such techniques will not be relevant. Michael Weinberg, staff attorney for Washington-based intellectual property (IP) advocacy group Public Knowledge, says that while text, music and video are automatically copyrighted, "the vast majority of physical objects aren't protected by any sort of IP right". Copying inventions protected by patents is illegal, as is replicating a trademarked logo, but measuring a desk and building a replica is not.

Panicking companies may push for stronger IP laws if 3D printing becomes more widespread, but Weinberg says this would be a mistake. He suggests companies learn from the media industry's mistakes and embrace the new opportunities it affords, perhaps by encouraging the legal downloading of object files. "If everyone has access to a 3D printer I can go online, pick an object that I want, customise it and print it out," he says. "That's an incredible opportunity for companies."

They will not want to miss the boat again.

Murder trial of LA police detective begins (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Former police detective Stephanie Lazarus was either a heartbroken, jilted lover driven to kill her romantic rival, or she was an innocent woman snared in a web of mishandled scientific evidence.

The contrasting portraits emerged Monday during opening statements at the murder trial of Lazarus.

Both sides said the proof of the cold case, which lingered for 26 years, would be in the forensic evidence. The science of DNA, developed in the years after the killing, could hold the key.

"A bite, a bullet, a gun barrel and a broken heart. That's the evidence that will prove the defendant Stephanie Lazarus murdered Sherri Rasmussen," Deputy District Attorney Shannon Presby told jurors in the crowded courtroom.

He said a bite on Rasmussen's arm contained saliva that was matched to Lazarus' DNA more than two decades after the killing.

Lazarus' lawyer, Mark Overland, said the DNA material was corrupted over the decades, and a forensic dentist would testify that the bite mark does not match an impression taken of Lazarus' teeth.

Presby said it has been a long time since Rasmussen died. Ronald Reagan was then president, and Bill Cosby was the biggest star on TV. DNA didn't exist as a forensic tool but it does now, he said.

Presby acknowledged the gun used in the killing wasn't found but said the bullets came from the same type of weapon that was sold to Lazarus at the Los Angeles Police Department gun shop when she became an officer.

Lazarus, 51, looked down and took notes but showed no reaction to the opening statements.

Her lawyer tracked the course of her accomplishments in the LAPD and suggested police were correct when they initially suspected Rasmussen had been killed by burglars.

Presby told a different story. He said Lazarus was obsessed with her former boyfriend, John Ruetten, who did not return her feelings. When he told her that he was marrying another woman, she was driven to vengeance, Presby suggested.

He said she broke into the townhouse that Ruetten shared with Rasmussen, his new wife, then bludgeoned and shot her to death after a confrontation that left blood on the walls.

Presby read jurors an excerpt of a letter Lazarus wrote to her mother a few months before the killing.

"I'm totally in love with John and the past year has really torn me up," it said. "I don't think I'll ever understand his decision."

The prosecutor also showed jurors a photograph of the dead Rasmussen juxtaposed with a picture of her in her bridal gown.

"Sherri Rasmussen was wearing the gown that Stephanie Lazarus believed was hers," Presby said.

Overland said the prosecution had it all wrong. He said the relationship between Lazarus and Ruetten was not one-sided. They were college friends who later became lovers, and their sexual relationship went on for about a year, he said. She became close to his family.

"The evidence will show that Stephanie Lazarus did love him and that they had a future together," the lawyer said. "She wasn't obsessed with him."

A short time before the wedding, Lazarus appealed to Ruetten to meet with her, Overland said. He came to her home and the meeting ended with them having sex, the lawyer said.

"He told Stephanie Lazarus he was moving on with his life," the attorney said.

Lazarus subsequently confronted Rasmussen at the hospital where she worked as a nursing supervisor, Overland acknowledged. What was said at that meeting will be a subject of testimony.

The former detective has been in custody since 2009.

Rewind This! VHS Documentary Tells of Home Video Revolution ...

Something was lost when videos went from magnetic tape and plastic, to plastic discs, and now to digital streams. Browsing isles is no more, as the once-great video shops slowly board up their windows across the country.

Future generations may know little of the days when buying a movie meant you owned it even if the Internet went down. Back when getting a movie meant you had to scour aisles of boxes in search of one whose cover art called back a story that echoed your interests. After all, already the story is fading of how home video changed entertainment forever.

?Home video redefined our relationship to movies. It provided control over how we consume entertainment and increased the access of media for all

future generations,? said Josh Johnson, one of the filmmakers behind upcoming documentary ?Rewind This!? via email.

Johnson, and the rest of the team at IPF Productions, Carolee Mitchell, Christopher Palmer, hope to tell the story of how and why home video came about, and how it changed our culture.

Home video did a lot more than just keep the classics alive. It also opened a rental market that gave B movies and films that didn?t make the silver screen their own chance to shine.

?Essentially, the rental market expanded, because of voracious consumer demand, into non-blockbuster, off-Hollywood video content which would never have had a theatrical life otherwise,? said Palmer.

?The rental industry supported a movie hungry audience with a massive amount of video content the home consumer could indulge in their own private space,? he said.

But the story goes beyond this. There are many, many films being left behind with the shift from VHS to DVD and Blu-Ray. Between 30 and 40 percent of films released on VHS may never be seen again on any other format.

And while researching this story, the trio of filmmakers found something interesting: there is a resurgence taking place of people going back to VHS.

According to Johnson, the fact that such a massive number of films are ?trapped on VHS,? is one of the key reasons behind the format?s quiet return; but there are other reasons behind it.

Palmer said, ?Most of the true VHS fanatics are children of the 1980s. Whether they are motivated by a sense of nostalgia or prefer the format for the grainy aesthetic qualities of magnetic tape or some other reason entirely unknown, each tapehead is unique like a snowflake. It would be impossible to say what motivation modern VHS fans hold in common.?

The move to digital also came at a cost, and some of the key elements that made home videos what they once were are being lost?elements that some hope to keep.

We?re losing the social connection to our home video watching habits,? Palmer said.

?We are also subjected to smaller and smaller artwork, making the rental experience more dependent on suggestion algorithms than the more traditional eye-catching graphic design,? he said. Certainly the titillating illustrated cover art has become more rare and unfashionable, since artwork moved to smaller formats, digital remaining the least visual.?

The team is currently raising funds for the film through Kickstarter, and have already well surpassed their goal. Mitchell said the campaign ?has shown us that this subject matter is important to a wider variety of individuals than we initially suspected. It has been really reaffirming to hear so much positive feedback about the focus of the film and the approach we?re taking to it.?

?Home video changed the media landscape in a permanent, lasting way,? she said. ?We are committed to covering that story with the sort of depth and passion it deserves. We can?t wait to share the finished film with audiences.?

Why Human Brains Are Smarter Than Chimp Brains

Synapses in key brain region continues to develop much longer in babies than in primates, study finds.

FRIDAY, Feb. 3 (HealthDay News) ?
Extended synaptic development may explain why humans are intellectually superior to primates, a new study suggests.

During the first few years of life, human babies? mental abilities continue to develop and absorb information and experiences from the environment in a way that far surpasses even the closest primate relatives of humans.

This is due to extended synaptic development, according to the study published online Feb. 1 in the journal Genome Research. The finding sheds new light on the biology and evolution of human brain development, according to the researchers.

?Why can we absorb environmental information during infancy and childhood and develop intellectual skills that chimpanzees cannot?? senior author Philipp Khaitovich, of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, asked in a journal news release. ?What makes the human brain so special??

He and his colleagues investigated how genes are read, or expressed, during brain development in young humans, chimps (which are closely related to humans), and macaques, a more distantly related species of primate.

The researchers focused on the prefrontal cortex, a more recently evolved brain region associated with abstract thought, planning, impulse control and problem solving, and the cerebellum, an ancient brain region involved in motor control.

?Among all developmental changes specific to the human brain, one process ? synaptogenesis ? clearly stood out,? Khaitovich said.

Synaptogenesis, the foundation of learning and memory in the brain, involves the formation of synaptic connections, strengthening useful connections and eliminating useless connections, he explained.

In humans, peak expression of synaptic genes in the prefrontal cortex doesn?t occur until about age five. In chimps and macaques, this occurs in the first year of life. This human-specific change occurs only in the prefrontal cortex, not in the cerebellum.

?Our findings suggest that the human brain remains extremely plastic and susceptible to environmental input during the first five years of life,? Khaitovich said. ?Our study uncovers one of the important mechanisms potentially involved in evolution of human cognition.?
