Wages dropped in 2011 for men and women

The gap between women?s and men?s pay remained about the same for the fourth straight year in 2011, as both genders got slammed by lower wages.

Women earned 77 cents for every dollar a man earned in 2011, the Census Bureau said this week as part of its extensive annual report on income and poverty.

The female-to-male earnings ratio for full-time workers has been little changed for four years, after hitting a record high of 78 percent in 2007.

Experts say the latest figures show that women aren?t making significant gains in terms of earning power ? but men aren?t either.

"It?s not that gap is not closing,? said Katherine Gallagher Robbins, senior policy analyst with the National Women?s Law Center. ?It?s that wages are sort of flattening.?

For men who work full-time and year-round, inflation-adjusted median earnings fell about 2.5 percent between 2010 and 2011, to $48,202, according to the Census Bureau. For women working full-time, the median, or midpoint, of annual earnings also fell by about 2.5 percent, to $37,118.

Experts say that there are other factors at work besides the lousy job market. The wage gap narrowed slowly and in fits and starts through the 1980s and 1990s, but further gains have been tough to come by.

?As a broad trend, I think we have plateaued in a way, or we may have plateaued,? said Ariane Hegewisch, study director with the Institute for Women?s Policy Research.

Women still face some big hurdles, especially those who want to have children and still advance in their careers, she said. Child care can be quite expensive, and some women may not be willing to put in the long hours required to make it to the top when their children are young.

The wage gap has persisted even though women have made huge inroads in traditionally male-dominated fields and positions. There have been several high-profile examples of that phenomenon, including Yahoo Inc.?s decision to appoint a pregnant Marissa Mayer to the role of chief executive.

Despite such gains, research shows that women generally take home less money each week even when they are doing the same job.

Women also now get postsecondary degrees at higher rates than men, and more education generally translates into higher earnings over the course of a lifetime. But experts note that what people study, and the fields they go into, matters as well.

?There?s a huge gender segregation there,? Hegewisch said. ?Men get more technical (degrees) and women are in education and social work and the kind of softer sciences, and they pay less.?

The recession of 2007-09 was so hard on male-dominated fields such as construction that some referred to it as the mancession.??With men hit so hard, 38 percent of women outearned their husbands in 2009, a 3 percentage point increase from 2008.

But as the economy began recovering in 2009, it was women who fared worse in the job market.?

The situation has since become more of a mixed bag. In August, the unemployment rate for men was 8.3 percent. For women, it was 7.8 percent.

?I think the story right now is that everyone is struggling,? Robbins said. ?Often when people think about the wage gap they think about it as women as compared to men. A lot of (families) have both women and men who are working. We think of it as a family security issue.?

Companies have constantly been developing programs that would cater the welfare of employees. Aside from financial programs, health and safety programs are also designed, implemented, and evaluated. The success, however, of these programs greatly relies on how employees will perceive and utilize their skills to maintain a safe relationship amongst their fellow employees and the working environment they revolve in.

In spite of the annual mock drills, safety leadership trainings, and constant reminders of the company, there are still a great number of accidents at work or outside of work involving employees. This only explains that how the employee will react and respond to the safety policies and procedures are major concerns of the company as well. Promoting behavioural safety has now become a vital concern for most companies. There has been a realization that no matter how hard the company tries to instil safety procedures to their employees and no matter how many times they conduct safety leadership trainings and drills, everything will boil down to how the employees will act appropriately and safely around and outside the workplace. Developing habits of safety awareness will be prioritized as well as conducting psychological drills to enhance safety motor skills and mental awareness to employees.

Companies are now adapting the trend of developing behavioural safety programs to identify how employees react and respond to various situations involving safety. This can be processed through psychological and written exams. Once this has been concluded, the focus will now be on how safety behaviour will be reinforced and improved. This process of altering the behavioural pattern of an individual are proven effective upon implementation. Through continuous trainings and evaluation, health and safety behaviours of employees can successfully be modified. It is acknowledged in the field of psychology, where this technique is based upon, that the behaviour of an individual can successfully be influenced or even modifies through positive reinforcement. How will this apply to employees? Through positive remarks or incentives, employees will be encouraged to be well aware of their actions toward promoting safety towards themselves and towards others. Once they are fully motivated, this behaviour now becomes a habit or formed permanently. The behavioural safety program resulted to employees that are now more conscious of their actions, more aware of safe and unsafe behaviour, and more involved in promoting the health and safety of the employees and everyone else in the company, whether it is whenever they are inside or out of the working environment.

Occupy protesters shut down DNC bus service

CHARLOTTE--On Tuesday, a group of more than 100 protesters shouting "Obama is a traitor" temporarily shut down official bus service that ferries around delegates at the Democratic National Convention. The protesters, some of whom were lying down in the street, were surrounded by Charlotte police, who used their bicycles to build a barrier around the group.

"What do you think of free speech zones?" shouted one protester to the police and onlookers, referring to the cordoned off areas for activists. "Does that seem strange to you?" Protesters also shouted that accused Wikileaks source Bradley Manning should be freed. At one point, the protesters raised a tent above their heads and set it on the ground. "Bad news, guys, they've pitched a tent," a police officer joked. "They might be here for the duration."

Delegates and convention-goers who were forced to wait for buses to be rerouted expressed surprise that the Occupy presence has been stronger at the DNC than the Republican convention in Tampa last week. "I didn't see them at the Republican convention," said Wandra Ashley-Williams, vice president of the?Maryland State Conference NAACP. "That's not good."

Make a Rocket Grill from a Small Charcoal Grill and a Charcoal Chimney StarterIf you want to up the performance of your small charcoal grill consider hacking it to use a chimney-shaped charcoal starter to hold the burning charcoal instead of the normal charcoal bed of the grill. This mod will raise the temperatures, reduce cooking times, and by concentrating the heat it reduces the amount of charcoal you need when only grilling a couple of burgers or a single steak.

Instructables user dlewisa removed the legs from his Weber Smokey Joe grill, and cut a hole so he could fit his chimney charcoal starter. He welded the two together, but if you're careful about cutting and grinding the hole for a precise fit you can skip that step so that your rocket grill can be disassembled for storage. Reattach the legs to the charcoal chimney for stability; you don't want it tipping over when its over 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Now all you need to do is load the chimney with charcoal (the author prefers natural wood chip charcoal), place a single piece of newspaper beneath the chimney, and light the paper. In fifteen minutes the charcoal will be ready and you can put your grill grates in the grill and optionally preheat the grill by covering for a few minutes.

Gospel Artist Or A Celebrity...What's It Gonna Be?

In today's economy everyone has to make the right decisions
and choices to avoid a total derailment of his or her finances. With sometimes
very little to spare, some seem to always find the funds they need to get the
things they want, and yet, when it comes to their music ministry, it sometimes
suffers at the hands of such things as getting the hair and nails done, and the
best outfit for that very special occasion that seem to happen every week!

As one who makes major sacrifices for my ministry, I pride myself in giving up the "finer things in life" to avoid running this God-given opportunity to ruins; I pride myself in excellence, and as such it bothers me a lot when some people take theirs for granted and treat it any kind of way reflected by their words and actions.

I bring this up to say that, there's a difference between those who want to sing because they know that they can, and those who want to sing because they know that God gave them the talent to minister to others and help to change lives. Too many artists are singing just because they can sing; they do not have a message, a word and a desire for ministry, they just want to show off their vocal abilities. Too often the listeners try to get a word and there's absolutely none to be had, just pure entertainment.

Are you missing out on your blessings as artists; is this the reason why some cannot move their careers forward because they're going about it the wrong way; will you take a moment to stop, identify this problem and fix it?

Let's face it, if you allow God to lead your ministry completely you will see a complete turn-around, stop trying to be celebrities - you're not selling enough records to justify that action, and ladies, start dressing like ladies and not like you're on a night out to the clubs. Gentlemen, for Christ's sake dress decently and pull your pants up, don't tell me that you have to be all thugged out to get your message across...what's up with the increasing number of tattoos and body piercings on Christian folks?

When people look at you what do they see, a Christian artist, a minister of the gospel or a celebrity? I know that you want to reach everyone and you simply cannot, so be yourself and approach your ministry with class, dignity and a spiritual focus and see how things start working in your favor.. take your message and your ministry seriously and others will take you seriously.
