Air Dictate app brings Siri's voice control to Macs, makes you feel just a little more important

Well, this was probably inevitable. Given that we've already seen Siri respond to custom commands, replace your remote and adjust the temperature in your house, it shouldn't come as a surprise that someone, somewhere has figured out how to make her control Macs. That's what's going on with Air Dictate by Avatron, a new app that allows you to dictate memos and other Very Important Business so that it appears in your text editor, without you having to type it yourself. Once you download the $1 app, you'll need to visit Avatron's website, download the Air Dictate Receiver software for your Mac and make sure the two devices are connected to the same WiFi network. So far as we can tell, it should work with any application that accepts text input, though for now it's only compatible with Macs and the iPhone 4S (sorry, jailbreakers).

Talks UN USA Israel Palestine Politics Security ?Negotiations with Israel are meaningless? ? Noam Chomsky

RT talks to academic, linguist, and philosopher Noam Chomsky about the application for the UN to recognize Palestine as an independent state, Israel and the US? unstable domestic situation.

Noam Chomsky discusses the Wall Street protests in the US and says, ?It is about time for some protests. There is a lot of plain criminal activity like selling subprime mortgages, which you know perfectly well are not going to be repaid?.

He says that is what caused the financial crisis, but the banks are left ?bigger and richer than before, corporate profits are reaching record levels?, yet ?unemployment is at about the level of the Great Depression?.

In terms of Palestinian UN bid for full membership, Chomsky says, ?It is true that the US announced that it would cast a veto. Couple of moths ago they cast a veto at the Security Council?.

Chomsky says that Israel has a choice between security and expansion, yet it has been choosing expansion for decades, which it can get away with until the US, EU and other powers continue to support it, states the professor.

Chomsky highlights that it is Israel that is imposing a condition on negotiations, which is settlement expansion.

Palestinians ?know perfectly well that if they go back to meaningless negotiations organized by the US, then they can talk forever, meanwhile settlement expansion will continue?.

Oklahoma foundation buys Woody Guthrie archive

(AP) ? A Tulsa-based foundation has purchased the comprehensive archive of folk singer Woody Guthrie's writings, recordings and artwork and plans to display the collection in a new center dedicated to the Oklahoma native.

The Tulsa World reports (http://is.gd/x69QbW ) that the George Kaiser Family Foundation will open the Woody Guthrie Center in downtown Tulsa by the end of 2012, to mark the centennial of Guthrie's birth. The four-building arts hub will feature public displays from the Guthrie archives and research space for scholars.

The foundation didn't disclose how much it paid for the collection, which includes a handwritten copy of Guthrie's anthem, "This Land is Your Land."

Guthrie died of Huntington's disease in 1967.

The archive had been housed in the Mount Kisko, N.Y., home of Nora Guthrie, the songwriter's daughter.

Pacers Top Pistons In NBA Opener

Danny Granger couldn't shoot straight for most of the night, yet the smile across his face as he iced his knees in the locker room after the game spoke volumes. In the past, as Granger's shot went, so went Indiana. He shot poorly on Monday night, but the Pacers still defeated the Detroit Pistons 91-79 in the season opener for both teams at the renamed Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Granger finished with 16 points on 6-for-18 shooting, but three Pacers had double-doubles, giving him a level of support that has been absent over the years. Roy Hibbert had 16 points and 14 rebounds, Tyler Hansbrough had 15 points and 13 rebounds and David West had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Add a defense that held Detroit to 36 percent shooting, and Granger could finally be at peace on an off night. "We definitely could not have done that last year," he said. "We have the ability to crash the boards. I think our big guys did an excellent job of dominating the glass, on the offensive end also. We didn't give up too many offensive rebounds. When they can dominate the glass like that, it's going to be hard to beat us." It was ironic that this season of high hopes started with a win against the Pistons. After all, it was an altercation with the Pistons and their fans in 2004 that ultimately forced the Pacers to rebuild. Indiana's fans haven't forgotten. As players were introduced, Ben Wallace, a central figure in that brawl, was booed loudly. The fans who saw a championship-caliber team dismantled after a flurry of off-the-court problems finally have returned, and a packed house saw the fruits of team president Larry Bird's rebuilding effort on display. West, the team's big-name free-agent pickup, was active and affected the game, even though he struggled to finish down low. Guard George Hill, the hometown hero acquired in a draft-night trade with San Antonio, provided a spark off the bench and created a buzz whenever his name was announced. Pacers coach Frank Vogel won his first game without an interim tag, and the team did it his way -- with smashmouth basketball. Indiana outrebounded the Pistons 53-40. "We still took a few too many bad shots, which I'm not too happy with," he said. "But we were attacking the basket, we were getting to the free throw line and we're making the extra pass, and that's the style of play that we're going to have. and it's going to win for us." The Pacers shot just 37 percent from the field, but got away with it in part because they had 18 offensive rebounds and 14 second-chance points. Detroit couldn't get its offense going to take advantage of Indiana's poor shooting. "We just have to play a whole lot more together game," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said after his debut as Pistons coach. "More ball movement, more working to get rhythm shots. It just shows you where we're at right now. We've got a lot of work to do." Jonas Jerebko and Rodney Stuckey each scored 17 points for the Pistons, who never led. "Now we know what we've got to do," Stuckey said. "We've got to stop complaining, we've got to rebound the basketball, we've got to play harder. That's it." Indiana led big early, but Detroit made a push in the second quarter before back-to-back 3s by George and Darren Collison increased Indiana's lead to 47-34. The Pacers led 52-38 at halftime and kept rolling at the start of the second half. Collison hit a baseline jumper off an offensive board by West, then followed it with a 3-pointer to push Indiana's lead to 59-42. Hibbert dunked and was fouled after a nifty inside feed from Granger. His free throw pushed Indiana's lead to 62-42 four minutes into the second half and forced a timeout by the Pistons. Detroit played a bit better right out of the timeout, but a bucket by Hansbrough and a fast break layup by Dahntay Jones pushed the lead back to 20 and forced another Detroit timeout with 4:42 left in the third. This timeout didn't work so well for the Pistons. Jones hit a long baseline jumper, then George Hill's steal and dunk pushed Indiana's lead to 74-50. The Pacers led 76-58 at the end of the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Granger pushed the lead to 85-61 with 7 minutes left in the game. Pacers fans gave the team a standing ovation in the final minute. Frank was impressed with the Pacers, but he didn't get carried away. "It's one game," he said. "What's the big boulevard down here? I don't know if there's going to be a parade this year. They're a good team, it's one game, they outplayed us tonight." Notes: Pacers C Jeff Foster sat out with a back injury he tweaked during the preseason. ... Pistons C Ben Wallace was loudly booed during pregame introductions. Wallace played a key role in the brawl in 2004 that eventually forced the Pacers to rebuild. ... Indiana F Jeff Pendergraph missed the game with a sprained right knee. ... Indiana outscored Detroit 16-4 from the free-throw line in the first half. ... Hill had four points and four assists in his regular-season debut for Indiana.

Insurer for Sandusky charity argues payouts

(AP) ? An insurance company for a charity founded by Jerry Sandusky argued in a federal complaint Friday that it should not have to pay legal expenses or claims for the former Penn State assistant football coach now accused of molesting children.

Federal Insurance Co. said it would be wrong for the company to have to cover Sandusky because he is accused of conduct that did not involve his position as an executive or employee of The Second Mile, a charity for at-risk youth he founded in 1977.

In addition, "Pennsylvania courts have found that a person who sexually abuses a minor should not expect his insurer to cover his misconduct, particularly where the average insured purchasing insurance would cringe at the very suggestion that he was paying for coverage arising out of sexual abuse of a child," lawyers for the New Jersey-based company wrote.

Sandusky is charged with sexually abusing 10 boys over more than a decade. He has denied the allegations and is awaiting trial in Centre County after waiving a preliminary hearing earlier this month.

His criminal defense lawyer, Joe Amendola, said Friday he had not seen the complaint, filed in federal court in Williamsport. Amendola said Sandusky was served Wednesday with a lawsuit filed in Philadelphia by one alleged victim and was getting a different lawyer to represent him in civil cases.

"I can say it's not unexpected that the insurance carrier would attempt to get out from under representing Jerry," Amendola said.

Dennis Mulvihill, a lawyer for Federal Insurance, referred questions to Mark Greenberg, the company's chief information officer. Greenberg did not immediately return a message left at his office after hours Friday.

A spokesman for The Second Mile said the matter was between Federal and Sandusky, and declined further comment.

The complaint asks the court to rule that Federal has no obligation to pay Sandusky's criminal defense costs or to indemnify him for civil or criminal claims related to alleged sexual abuse of children.

"Extending insurance coverage to Sandusky is unlawful because providing insurance coverage for claims arising from sexual assault, molestation, and/or abuse of minors is repugnant to Pennsylvania public policy," according to the complaint.

Amendola said Sandusky has not sought coverage regarding the criminal case.

'Layaway angels' and gold coins: Americans find new ways to warm hearts

'Layaway angels' and the phenomenon of jewelry and coins being dropped into Salvation Army kettles shows Americans may be looking for social connections in their giving this holiday season.

From Bangor, Maine, to Los Angeles, anonymous philanthropists known as ?layaway angels? are paying off tens of thousands of dollars in layaway items for struggling families.

The Salvation Army, too, is seeing evidence of a shift in altruistic behavior at their iconic red kettles. Even as overall coin-dropping is down from last year, people in cities like Atlanta and Kokomo, Ind., are dropping off valuable items, including gold krugerrands, gold bars, and even diamond wedding bands, in large numbers.

Taken together, the two trends highlight a subtle change in how some Americans are choosing to give during hard economic times. And, it seems, those who are donating this holiday season may be searching for more emotionally satisfying ways to give.

?Emotions matter to people, and in order to give you need a good story, and that could be a factor,? says Keith Brown, a sociology professor at St. Joseph's University, in Philadelphia.

The ?layaway angels? phenomenon, which began in Michigan, has settled more than 1,000 layaway accounts with a value of $400,000, according to Kmart. The layaway option, a pre-credit card retail invention that allows customers to gradually pay off the price of an item, has itself made a comeback as credit card use has dropped amid high unemployment and stubborn economic uncertainty.

In Orange County, Calif., one man saw a local story about the layaway angels phenomenon and promptly called the Costa Mesa Kmart, where he spent over $15,000 to settle hundreds of layaway accounts. Other angels had already settled $8,000 worth of layaway accounts at the store.

The ?layaway angels? phenomenon likely taps into a search for social connections between those who give and those who receive, Scott Huettel, a psychology professor at Duke University, tells ABC News.

"In layaway, they're going in, finding and helping specific people, rather than just giving an amount that could help anyone," said Professor Huettel. "Having an identifiable person to help turns [out] to be a greater motivator rather than thinking about the general greater good."

Indonesia girl back with family after 2004 tsunami (AP)

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia ? A girl who was swept away in the Indian Ocean tsunami seven years ago said Friday she broke down in tears this week after tracking down her parents, who had long lost hope of finding her alive.

The 15-year-old showed up in Aceh province's hard-hit town of Meulaboh earlier this week, saying that not long after the wave hit she was "adopted" by a woman who called her Wati and forced her to beg, sometimes beating her and keeping her in the streets until 1 a.m.

When the teen stopped bringing in money, she was told, "Go ahead, leave ... go find your parents then, they're in Meulaboh."

With only patchy memories about her past ? she was only 8 when the tsunami hit, an age where most children don't know their relatives' full names ? Wati began her search, telling people she thought her grandfather was "Ibrahim."

She met a pedicab driver in Meulaboh, who brought her to a man by that name. Though she didn't look familiar, he, in turn, quickly summoned her parents.

"When I saw my mother, I knew it was her," said the wide-eyed girl, her hair cropped close to her head. "I just knew."

The family, who say the girl's original name is Meri Yuranda, is also now convinced.

The Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen nations hit Aceh ? closest to the epicenter of the magnitude-9.1 quake that spawned the towering waves ? the hardest.

With tens of thousands of bodies washed to sea in that province alone, many families continue to cling to hope of finding lost loved ones. Reunions, however, are rare. And all announced in the last five years have turned out to be untrue. Even so, some mothers continue to believe a child is theirs even after DNA tests prove otherwise.

Either way, without any challenges to the claims, Wati now has a family.

Yusniar binti Ibrahim Nur, the mother, told The Associated Press she had all the evidence she needed.

"She has her father's face," the 35-year-old woman said by telephone. "And when I saw the scar over her eye and mole on her hip, I was even more sure."

It doesn't worry her, she said, that the girl and her husband have different accounts of what happened on the day the tsunami hit their tiny village of Ujong Baroh just outside of Meulaboh.

Wati remembers her father putting her into a boat with her younger sister, long presumed dead as well, and then getting separated. She says she remembers being surrounded by water and crying.

Her father says he put both of his daughters on the roof of their house hoping they'd be safe.

"Maybe she fell into the boat, maybe someone helped her. I just don't know," said Yusniar.

"I just thank God my prayers have been answered," she said. "For years, I searched everywhere. I'd really given up."

Gracenote launches ACR TV recognition, HABU mood-based music curation

It's that pop song again -- you know, the one that forces you to flip the radio to anything else. But still, you're dying to know what it's called, if only to avoid hearing it ever again. Boom Boom? Heartbeat? Shazam! Super Bass, by Nicki Minaj. If you haven't used Shazam, chances are you know someone that does, and often. Gracenote's new Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) technology takes that same concept and applies it to TV shows and movies, and it's coming soon to a smartphone or tablet near you. A yet-to-be-named app will let your device "listen" to whatever you're watching, identifying TV shows and movies based on dialogue or the soundtrack, then displaying a variety of info about whatever's on screen. Gracenote is also expanding its audio offerings, showing off both HABU and MoodGrid, which are mood-based music curation services for mobile devices and in-car systems, respectively. Software groups songs based on emotional themes, then plays them back depending on your selected mood. Happy? Sad? Intrigued? We'll need to wait until CES for the full scoop from Gracenote.

BRCA genes and cancer outcomes | Our Bodies Our Blog

You may have seen recent news coverage along the lines of ?BRCA variants not tied to worse cancer outcomes.? This story refers to a recently published study about changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes that affect breast and ovarian cancer. Women with mutated versions of the genes have greater risks of breast and ovarian cancer than women with typical versions of the genes.

In the new study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers tried to figure out whether women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations who do develop cancer have worse outcomes than women without the mutations. They compared records for women with breast cancer and one of the mutations with those of women with breast cancer who did not have these gene changes.

Overall, they found that women with BRCA1 mutations had similar rates of metastatic (?distant?) cancer recurrence and death as women without it. Women with BRCA2 mutations had higher risks of recurrence and death, although the risk was similar when the women got adjuvant therapy (additional treatment to help prevent recurrences). Other factors like age and stage of the cancer also made a difference.

However, this study should be interpreted with caution. Bigger studies are probably still needed to properly understand any effects of these genes on women?s cancer therapy outcomes. The similarity of outcomes between women with and without the mutations may have to do, in part, with what we have learned about therapies for women with those mutated genes ? which therapies don?t work as well for them, and which therapies might be added on for better outcomes. The researchers for the current study do say that women with mutated BRCA1/2 genes were more likely to have received adjuvant therapy, and the authors were unable to look at women?s results by how much chemotherapy they received.

While women who have BRCA1/2 mutations may be advised to have earlier or more frequent cancer screenings than other women, it?s not yet completely clear who should get tested for these mutations or if women should be tested once they?re diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer.

As we learn more about how our genes affect our cancer risks and therapy outcomes, I expect we?ll see more and more news on these topics, and it may take some time to figure out how to assess risk, guide cancer therapies, and how our outcomes change based on this knowledge. Here are a few helpful resources for this growing area of study:

  • Genetics Home Reference ? Cancers ? information from the National Library of Medicine on genes related to a number of cancers
  • General Cancer Genetics Information ? information from the National Cancer Institute on genetic (hereditary) risks for cancer, gene testing, a dictionary of genetics terms, and other resources
  • My Cancer Genome ? information intended to help inform physicians about tumor (not hereditary) genes and their effect on cancer therapy. Disclosure: I work with the team that produces this site.
