Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM Released for HTC One X [VIDEO]

Google recently announced the newest version of Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) at the Google I/O 2012 in San Francisco. The Jelly Bean is first expected to be available for Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom devices. However, Android developers have managed to port the Jelly Bean ROM on Galaxy Nexus. Now, an XDA Senior Member tgascoigne has ported an initial release of Jelly Bean to the international variant of HTC One X.

Users of HTC One X will now be able to run their device on the latest version of Android 4.1. "This is a port of Jellybean, based off of the roms for the two nexus devices that were released yesterday. I'm working to add in all of the key features at the moment, and it's going pretty well, so you can probably expect to see some kind of Alpha release fairly soon," claims tgascoigne on xda-developers. Currently, the ROM is not working perfectly since it has issues related to wi-fi, audio, camera and more.

You can check out for more details and instructions on how to get hold of the taste of Jelly Bean on your HTC One X on the official thread?on xda-developers. However, on a serious note it is recommended to wait for the HTC's official update to Jelly Bean for your One X.

The HTC has responded to Android Central?regarding Android 4.1(Jelly Bean). "We are excited about Android Jelly Bean and are planning to support it across a variety of our devices. We are reviewing the software to determine our upgrade plans and schedule, so please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans," claims HTC.

The Jelly Bean is expected to offer faster transition between homescreen and applications and making the device more responsive. It is optimised to offer Android's best performance and lowest touch latency. In addition, it brings a major update to the Android notifications framework, while apps will be able to display larger and richer notifications to users which can also be expanded, collapsed with just a pinch or swipe.

Strong earthquake rocks China's Central Asian frontier; reports say casualties unknown

A strong earthquake has jolted China's Central Asian frontier, shaking buildings and cutting off electricity in the remote mountainous area and sending rescuers in search of casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the Saturday morning quake that hit the Xinjiang region at 6.3 magnitude, while China's Earthquake Networks Center put it at 6.6.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that residents near the epicenter were shaken out of bed in pre-dawn darkness and that some households lost electricity. It reported that the quake shook buildings 200 kilometers, or 120 miles, to the west in the regional capital, Urumqi.

Xinhua said rescuers are being dispatched to the sparsely populated area to search for casualties.

After Supreme Court ruling, Medicaid expansion faces uncertainty

A main goal of the Affordable Care Act was to increase the rolls of insured Americans, with about half coming from Medicaid. But the Supreme Court made it easier for states to opt out of the expanded program.

This week's Supreme Court on health-care reform represented a legal victory for President Obama on many fronts, but the ruling made it easier for states to opt out of one important area, the expansion of Medicaid for America's poor.

The president won a major enlargement of Medicaid funding as part of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. As many as 17 million people, or about one-third of Americans who lack health insurance, stood to gain coverage under the law.

But many states, which administer the Medicaid program and help to fund it alongside the federal government, joined a legal challenge to the act. Some 26 states argued that this portion of the law was an unlawful federal intrusion into their affairs.

Participation in Medicaid has always been at the discretion of states. In Thursday's ruling, a majority of justices indicated that the federal government could not force states to accept the law's expansion of the program, saying the threat that states refusing to participate in the expansion would lose all federal Medicaid funding was unconstitutionally coercive.

The result, potentially, could be to undercut Mr. Obama's major goal of expanding health insurance to more Americans. As many as half of people gaining coverage were expected to do so within Medicaid.

The law will still call for a big increase in federal spending on Medicaid, as much as $930 billion during the next decade to insure Americans whose income is 1.33 times the official poverty level or lower. But how many new people are enrolled under this plan will depend on whether states opt in.

"We are concerned many states will choose not to expand coverage," Bruce Siegel, president of the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, said Thursday in a statement released following the court's decision. "In the 26 states that participated in the federal lawsuit, more than 27 million people have no insurance," he added, and many of those who would have been eligible for Medicaid in 2014 "might no longer have that option."

His association represents so-called "safety-net hospitals," which serve a high percentage of poor patients and get significant funding through Medicaid.

States that challenged the Obama law include many in the South, Midwest, Great Plains, and Rocky Mountain region. Whether they opt out of the law remains to be seen. The vast sums of money that the federal government would be sending to the states to cover the Medicaid expansion create significant incentives to participate.

Republican governors didn't commit to a particular position on the Medicaid expansion. Still, several went out of their way in statements released after the ruling to cast Medicaid as a budget-buster in the law.

"A Medicaid expansion would put 1 in 4 Hoosiers (approximately 500,000 new enrollees) in Medicaid at a cost of approximately $2 billion over 10 years," Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana said. Indiana is seeking a federal waiver to cover more people through a program called the Healthy Indiana Plan instead.

Sergey Brin demos Project Glass on stage at Google IO

It's hard to ignore Google's X Lab-born Project Glass. News of the slim-lined, sci-fi goggles' existence first surfaced this past February and it wasn't long after that Mountain View's own elite began to flaunt the heads-up display in public. While little of the device's true purpose and functionality is known, we have been privy to certain features over the past few months, like photo sharing to Google+ and even its ability to overlay Maps. Though product lead Steve Lee shrugged off rumors of a late 2012 launch, it does appear the company's itching to spill a few more (jelly) beans at today's I/O conference.

To do that, Sergey Brin rushed onstage at Google I/O wearing the glass units to give us a brief live action demo courtesy of a skydive over San Francisco. Video of the jump, performed by four divers in a blimp, was streamed live through Google Hangouts to attendees at the Moscone Center. In keeping with the extreme vibe of this demonstration, the showcase was handed off to bikers on the rooftop, also outfitted with the lenses, who jumped from building to building via ramp and then eventually cycled into the arena and right up to Sergey, himself. As a finishing touch, Brin also snapped a shot of the team using his own headset. All told, it's a pretty incredible way to once again officially tease this forward-looking tech.

Hispanics looking for November gains in US house

FILE - In this Oct. 7, 2010 file photo, Abel Maldonado speaks in Sunnyvale, Calif., Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010. It's looking like a big election year for Hispanics in Congress. (AP) ? Jose Hernandez worked in farm fields with his Mexican-immigrant parents before becoming an astronaut. Iraq War veteran Julius Melendez is the third generation of his Puerto Rican family to serve in the military. And Tony Cardenas, the youngest of 11 children of immigrant farmers from Jalisco, Mexico, has served in the California Assembly and on the Los Angeles City Council.

Next year, all of them could be coming to Congress.

The 2012 election is shaping up as a big one in the House for Hispanics. There are currently 29 in the House ? including a Pacific islands delegate and Puerto Rico's resident commissioner ? according to the Congressional Research Service. That number is virtually guaranteed to increase by at least three or four seats because of once-a-decade redistricting that's created new Hispanic-majority districts in California and Texas. On top of that, Hispanics could win more seats in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Florida.

"It's a watershed election for the Latino community," said Rep. Raul Grivalja, D-Ariz. "Our ability to influence decisions is evident and present and our ability to motivate voters is critical."

Hispanics are the fastest-growing group in the United States, increasing in population by more than 15 million between 2000 and 2010, according to U.S. Census data. They make up more than 16 percent of the U.S. population, far more than their share of roughly 5 percent of the seats in the House.

In comparison, there are 44 blacks in the House, including two delegates, according to the CRS, a record number. Blacks comprise roughly 10 percent of the House, compared to about 12 percent of the U.S. population. There are 10 Asian-Americans in the House, according to the CRS, including two delegates, roughly 2 percent of the chamber compared to roughly 5 percent of the U.S. population.

Both parties say Hispanic candidates are pivotal in this year's race for control of the House.

Democrats, who need a net gain of 25 seats to take a majority, say Hispanic candidates could make up a fifth or more of that margin. Republicans, challenging in fewer districts because of their large current majority, have recruited strong Hispanic candidates for a handful of districts seen as opportunities to snatch Democratic seats.

The competition for Hispanic votes in congressional races ? whatever the backgrounds of the candidates they're voting for ? mirrors the presidential contest. While Hispanics as a group have historically favored Democrats, Republican Mitt Romney has indicated he will compete vigorously with President Barack Obama for their support.

Democrats say maximizing Hispanic turnout is a key to electoral success. Republicans, in turn, say chipping away at Democrats' margins with the group is crucial.

Obama injected fresh energy into the competition when he announced he was easing enforcement of immigration laws for hundreds of thousands of younger illegal immigrants and offering them a chance to stay in the U.S. and work. That is expected to motivate more Hispanic voters to turn out for Democrats in November.

California is expected to be the center of Hispanic increases in Congress. Democrats are running two Hispanic candidates likely to win in the fall: Cardenas, a Los Angeles City councilman, and Juan Vargas, a state senator and son of Mexican immigrants. Republican David Valadao, a state assemblyman and son of Portuguese immigrants, is likely to win a GOP-leaning district.

In competitive seats in California, both parties are running Hispanic candidates against incumbents who are not.

Hernandez, the former astronaut, is a Democrat challenging first-term GOP Rep. Jeff Dunham in the newly drawn 10th Congressional District. As a child Hernandez helped his parents in the field and went on to study engineering in college. He makes his roots a big part of his appeal to voters, telling the story of how he watched the Apollo 17 launch on TV and his father laid out how he could become an astronaut himself.

"I was able to rise from the fields of California and touch the sky on the space shuttle Discovery as an astronaut," he said when he announced his campaign last October.

Democrats also have high hopes for Raul Ruiz, a medical doctor who grew up in a trailer with his Mexican farmworker parents and has received three graduate degrees from Harvard. Ruiz is running against GOP Rep. Mary Bono Mack, who has been in Congress since 1998. Democrats say the seat will be competitive this fall.

For the GOP, a prominent Hispanic candidate, Abel Maldonado, California's former lieutenant governor, is one of its best chances to pick off an incumbent. Maldonado is running against endangered Democratic Rep. Lois Capps, who has seen her district turn more conservative with redistricting. Maldonado's campaign ads highlight his background ? his parents are Mexican immigrant farmers who eventually built their own farming business ? and show him standing in a strawberry field and talking about what he learned from his father.

In one ad, as the camera pans over California farmland, Maldonado says: "It's time to teach Washington the lessons we've learned growing up."

Hispanic candidates are figuring prominently in other states where the Hispanic population has grown quickly.

In New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham is favored to take the state's 1st Congressional District, after Rep. Martin Heinrich decided to run for the Senate. In Nevada, State Assembly Speaker John Oceguera is taking on GOP Rep. Joe Heck in one of the Democrats' top targeted races. If she wins a crowded primary for Arizona's new 9th Congressional District, Leah Campos Schandlbauer, a former CIA agent, could give Republicans a prominent Hispanic on the ballot in what's likely to be a fiercely contested race.

In Florida, which has an August primary, Democrats have two Hispanic candidates ? businesswoman Gloria Romero Roses, who was born in Colombia, and lawyer Joe Garcia, a Cuban-American ? in the race to take on Republican Rep. David Rivera, a Cuban-American whom Democrats see as vulnerable. Republicans have two prominent Puerto Rican candidates vying to take on former Rep. Alan Grayson in Florida's Orlando-area 9th Congressional District: John "Q'' Quinones, a county commissioner and former state representative, and Melendez, the Iraq War veteran and a member of the local school board. Both are appealing to the district's sizable Hispanic population.

There has been one big disappointment for Hispanic growth in the House in 2012: Texas. It was poised to have the most new Hispanic members, with the state adding four new seats in 2012 thanks to large Hispanic growth. But at most two of the new seats will be represented by Hispanic lawmakers. The state is also losing two long-time Hispanic lawmakers, Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, who is retiring, and Rep. Silvestre Reyes, who lost a primary to a non-Hispanic opponent, though Gonzalez is likely to be replaced by Joaquin Castro, a state lawmaker, Harvard Law graduate and second-generation Mexican-American.

Gonzalez, the chairman of the House Hispanic Caucus, said he still believes Hispanic influence is on the rise in the House, and he noted more Hispanic candidates running in competitive districts in 2012.

"Our power will only increase as time goes on," said Gonzalez. "Because of demographics, as goes the future of the Latino family, so goes the future of the United States."

Mexican Pena Nieto has big lead for Sunday's election

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican presidential front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto goes into Sunday's election with a wide lead over his rivals, opinion polls showed on Wednesday, putting him on track to return to power the party that ruled for much of the last century.

The final voter survey of the campaign by newspaper El Universal showed Pena Nieto, of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, rising 4.2 percentage points to 41.2 percent from a poll published on June 18.

That gave him a 17.4-point lead over leftist and 2006 runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who rose 0.3 percentage points to 23.8 percent, the survey showed.

Josefina Vazquez Mota, candidate of the ruling National Action Party (PAN), trailed in third place with 20.6 percent, a drop of a 0.8 percentage point from the previous survey.

Two other polls published on Wednesday, legally the final day of campaigning, gave the PRI candidate a lead of between 10 and 16 points over Lopez Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City.

Mexican financial markets already have factored in a Pena Nieto win, so a close finish that puts his mandate and economic reforms at risk could spook investors and hit asset prices.

Pena Nieto's PRI ruled Mexico between 1929 and 2000, when it was ousted by the PAN in a presidential election.

The PAN's victory was hailed as a triumph of democracy, but its record on the economy and its failure to contain violent crime opened the door to a return by the PRI.

President Felipe Calderon has struggled to improve weak growth, unable to push through many of his planned reforms because of opposition from the PRI and other parties in Congress, where the PAN has never had a majority.

Meanwhile rampant violence between drug cartels and their clashes with the state has claimed more than 55,000 lives since 2007, further eroding confidence in the government.

Calderon sent in the armed forces to bring the gangs to heel soon after taking office in December 2006, but despite capturing or killing many top bosses, the bloodshed has escalated.

BREAK FROM PRI'S PAST

The PRI laid the foundations for modern Mexico, though the latter part of its long rule in particular was tainted by corruption, vote-rigging and heavy-handed repression of dissent.

Pena Nieto has sought to distance himself from the PRI's criticized past legacy, saying the party has changed.

"There is a new PRI," Pena Nieto said in an interview with newspaper El Universal's Wednesday edition. "It's the others who have not changed. They are living in the past.

"But the PRI never left. It has lost and won, competed democratically and understood change," he said.

Pena Nieto has pledged a tax overhaul and to open up state oil monopoly Pemex to more private investment, breaking with the traditions of the PRI, which nationalized Mexico's oil industry in 1938.

The bold steps he has promised to boost outside involvement in oil exploration, refining and production are central to his bid to revamp the PRI's image and plans to boost the economy.

But even if he wins the election and his party secures a majority in Congress, Pena Nieto faces a challenge to shake up Pemex, which is struggling with a heavy tax burden, bloated workforce and oil fields in decline.

CONGRESSIONAL MAJORITY

Another poll published for the Excelsior newspaper put Pena Nieto's support at 44 percent, a 16-point lead over Lopez Obrador. That poll had Vazquez Mota, who is bidding to become Mexico's first woman president, in third place with 25 percent.

A third poll by the Reforma newspaper showed Pena Nieto maintaining a sizeable lead with 41 percent support, 10 percentage points ahead of Lopez Obrador on 31 percent.

The three polls were conducted between June 21 and 25 using samples of 1,200 to 2,000 eligible voters. The margin of error for the polls was 2.9 percentage points or lower.

Recent polls suggest the PRI could win a working majority in both the Senate and lower house of Congress.

That would help strengthen its mandate to push through fiscal and energy reforms that stalled under Calderon.

Lopez Obrador lost the 2006 election to Calderon in a tight finish and contested the results, staging months of protests and unnerving investors in Latin America's second-largest economy.

He has stirred up fears of a repeat of the chaos, accusing the PRI of trying to rig the vote, although any protests may be short-lived if Pena Nieto wins by a wide margin.

A close result would raise the risk of demonstrations, particularly as Lopez Obrador has the support of a newly emerged student movement that shook up the campaign with huge rallies.

"Lopez Obrador is showing a very different face, but he seems very like (Venezuela's) Hugo Chavez or (Bolivia's) Evo Morales or those kind of leaders," said Mario Genaro, 42, as he waited for Pena Nieto to speak at a closing campaign rally in the town of Toluca outside Mexico City.

"I hope we Mexicans have the vision to see he is not a person that is right for us," said Genaro, who lived for 10 years in Laredo, Texas, working for Ford but returned in 2010 after the U.S. recession to open his own business.

Hot Lava Action

Remember when we were kids and would play hot lava? We would tip-toe on stones hoping not to fall into the steaming hot volcano (or the dirt and weeds). Let's pretend it's real for a moment, shall we? Scientists tossed a 66 pound bag, 240 feet into a lava lake. What happens next is violent. Yikes. I will never play hot lava again.

Forget Dolls!

This has been a slow trend since the 80's, but now, for the first time ever, girls prefer playing with video games over dolls. Boys have turned their backs on boys toys, too, preferring electronic items over construction toys. Overall, a survey of children's wishlists found the top three toys for children are #1) electronic toys, #2) construction toys, and #3) dolls. The biggest dip was in interest for board games. Only 3% of those born in the 90's say board games are their #1 source of fun.

Phones/Facebook: Around your house are boardgames fun, or dangerous for family bonding?

Head Outside, Mr. Fitness

If you're looking to get the most out of your daily (or weekly) workout, then head outdoors. Researchers found that any exercise will help deal with stress, but working out in natural environments is much better for your mental health than working out in a gym.

Researchers followed over 5,000 people at the age of 50, and found those that are labeled "moderate drinkers," meaning no more than 14 drinks a week, scored highest in measurements of dexterity, emotion, and mobility.

Sony, Panasonic tying up in advanced TV displays

(AP) ? Long-time Japanese rivals Sony Corp. and Panasonic Corp. are working together to develop next-generation TV panels called OLEDs in a reversal of decades of rivalry as they try to catch up with South Korea's Samsung Electronics.

The companies said in a joint statement Monday they will share core technologies to develop OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, panels. They are aiming for low-cost mass production by 2013.

Both Sony and Panasonic have posted big losses after falling behind Samsung Electronics Co. and other Asian rivals in TVs. The joining of forces marks a departure from a long rivalry and highlights the pressure that Japanese manufacturers face to catch-up with Samsung in TVs.

Samsung is planning to start selling TVs with big OLED screens later this year. OLEDs use a different technology from Liquid Crystal Displays and delivers very clear, vivid imagery.

Fitch Ratings said the Sony-Panasonic tie-up underlined "the fall of Japanese tech companies," as such a tie-up was previously "unthinkable."

"Japanese OLED investment is better late than never," said Alvin Lim, Associate Director at Fitch. "While consumer demand for OLED is still unproven, without investment Japanese manufacturers could become stranded in the TV market should this technology become mainstream."

Sony was the first in the world to sell an OLED TV, with its 11-inch model in 2007, but it wasn't a strong seller, partly because of its small size.

Sony buys liquid-crystal displays from other manufacturers. It ended its joint-venture with Samsung to make LCDs earlier this year as panel prices fell and it became more cost-efficient to buy from other makers.

Both Sony and Panasonic reported record losses for the fiscal year ended March 31. They took a battering from plunging prices and a soaring yen, which puts the Japanese at a disadvantage against the Koreans, in price competitiveness.

Analysts say the Japanese could also be hit by Apple Inc.'s foray into TVs that may come in a couple of years. Apple has already eroded the profitability of the Japanese electronics makers with its hit iPod, iPhone and iPad devices.

First Fukushima seafood sold since nuke crisis

The first seafood caught off Japan's Fukushima coastline since last year's nuclear disaster went on sale Monday, but the offerings were limited to octopus and marine snails because of persisting fears about radiation.

Octopus and whelk, a kind of marine snail, were chosen for the initial shipments because testing for radioactive cesium consistently measured no detectable amounts, according to the Fukushima Prefectural (state) fishing cooperative. They were caught Friday and boiled so they last longer while being tested for radiation before they could be sold Monday.

Flounder, sea bass and other fish from Fukushima can't be sold yet because of contamination. It was unclear when they will be approved for sale as they measure above the limit in radiation set by the government. The government is testing for radioactive iodine as well, but its half-life is shorter than cesium and thus is less worrisome.

"It was crisp when I bit into it, and it tasted so good," said Yasuhiro Yoshida, who oversees the seafood section at York Benimaru supermarket in Soma, which sold out of about 30 kilograms (65 pounds) of the snails and 40 kilograms (90 pounds) of the octopus that had been shipped to the store.

Japan: Fukushima nuclear pool not unstable

The March 11 earthquake and tsunami last year left the coastlines of northeastern Japan devastated, and displaced tens of thousands of people. Entire towns were contaminated by the radiation leaking from Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, where three reactors went into meltdowns.

"I was filled with both uncertainty and hope today, but I was so happy when I found out the local supermarket had sold out by 3 p.m.," said Hirofumi Konno, an official in charge of sales at the fishing cooperative in Soma city in coastal Fukushima.

PhotoBlog: 36 views of the Fukushima exclusion zone

He said he hoped crabs would be next to go on sale as radiation had not been detected in them, but he acknowledged things will take time, perhaps years, especially for other kinds of fish. Radiation amounts have been decreasing, but cesium lasts years.

The octopus and snail were selling at almost half of what they fetched before the disaster, he said. But he said people were buying Fukushima seafood to show support for local fishermen. The items were available locally but not in the whole prefecture or the Tokyo area.

Nobuyuki Yagi, a University of Tokyo professor studying the fisheries industry after the disaster, said serious concerns remain over whether anyone would buy Fukushima fish, and the key lay in finding the types of fish that don't store radioactive elements.

"Fishing cannot survive unless people buy the fish. That may seem obvious, but Fukushima is facing up to this," he said in a statement earlier this month.

Japan to lift entry ban on nuclear no-go zones

Farmlands have also been contaminated, and every grain of rice will be tested at harvest in some areas before they can be sold. The image of Fukushima produce has been seriously tarnished, and worried consumers, especially those with children, are shunning Fukushima-grown food.

"We are in for the long haul," Konno said in a telephone interview.

Lincecum working every angle to figure out funk

(AP Photo/Eric Risberg)

(AP) ? Tim Lincecum looks back at his extreme, 30-pound weight loss before this season and wishes he had approached it all differently.

He insists he dropped it too fast, taking drastic measures. All because the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner didn't feel quite right at the 190 pounds he reached in 2011 eating whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. The thing is, he was still winning then. But his body began to hurt, in ways it never had before.

He only just turned 28 on June 15.

"It's kind of coming to terms with my mortality," Lincecum said in a candid, 10-minute interview Saturday. "I always thought, 'Oh, I'm never going to be sore.' Like as a kid growing up, I was never sore. I never hurt, I could bounce back from things. I was like ? I don't even know, what kind of animal rebounds from everything? ? a dog. They bump their head and forget about it four seconds later."

Now, the San Francisco Giants right-hander (2-8) has added 10 pounds back on his slender frame to get to 167 ? and some scouts think he should keep pounding the junk food and calories because, perhaps, a little more on his body will lead to much more on his suddenly slower fastball and even his off-speed pitches that no longer zing as they did in his dominant days that at the moment seem so long ago.

Lincecum believes he made strides in his start Friday night at Oakland, even after a 43-pitch inning in which he fell behind 3-0 but found his rhythm in time to strike out the side. He didn't earn a decision in his team's 5-4 comeback win against the Athletics.

Manager Bruce Bochy had reliever Shane Loux warming up in the bullpen in the first but never had to go out early to replace Lincecum, who wound up lasting six innings while giving up three hits and no more runs. He struck out eight and walked four.

"That's the last thing I wanted to do. That would've been rock bottom for the kid," Bochy said. "It was more a credit to Timmy. He just had enough. He found his game at the right time, thank goodness. We have a lot of baseball left. This is a good start, I'll say that."

Yet Lincecum still hasn't won in 10 starts since beating San Diego on April 28, going 0-6 in the worst drought in a career that featured four All-Star selections in his first four full seasons after being selected 10th overall in the 2006 draft out of Washington and making his major league debut the following May.

After the first, Lincecum repeatedly told fellow starter Ryan Vogelsong how furious he had become, sprinkling in his regular array of curse words in their conversation.

"He called me over," Vogelsong said. "I didn't tell him anything he doesn't know. I just kind of reminded him, 'Hey, keep going.'"

On Saturday, Lincecum spent much of his time before the middle game of the Bay Bridge Series studying film in a corner of the clubhouse before heading to the training room for a rubdown on his back.

"As a pitcher, we get caught up in the fact that as a pitcher we're the center of attention, we've got to control the pace of the game and when we can't control things it upsets us," he said. "To not be able to control it at a level like this and also when it's continuously happening it kind of makes you check yourself and look in the mirror. ...

"Last night was the closest I think I got back to being myself. For me to say this is going to be the light switch that turns on and changes everything, I can't really say that. I still gave up three runs. I take that in the back of my mind. It's slicing unneeded pieces of clay away from the masterpiece or the work of art you're trying to make. For me that's, I wouldn't say reinventing myself but finding the edges, taking care of the things I wasn't necessarily worried about before. Until last night it was eluding me. To find things in the midst of (stinking) is kind of nice and refreshing."

Lincecum considers his latest struggles a much different case than the 0-5 August he endured in 2010 before rebounding and becoming the winning pitcher in the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas that fall that brought the Giants their improbable championship ? the first for the city since the franchise moved West from New York in 1958.

"To be honest, I was lazy. I was a lazier person," Lincecum said. "Now, I don't feel like that's the case, I feel like I'm putting more time in between my starts and focusing better. That's also why it makes it so hard to look at yourself. It's easy to come into a game and not work as hard as everybody else has to and do well, and be like, 'Ha, I didn't have to do everything you guys did.'

"Now, I'm working as hard as they are, not because I feel I have to keep up with them, but because I know the game and I need to. The game calls upon you to do that. In 2010 in August ... it wasn't about me, it was the bigger picture. I'm a big believer in karma and things happen for a reason, and that August for me was a big wakeup call. I think this is a different animal."

Lincecum's fastball tops out these days at 92-93 mph but is often 90-91, a significant difference from his former 94 mph average. Whether he will regain some of his velocity with more weight on, nobody is sure.

"I want to feel I'm at a comfortable weight but I know I fluctuate so easily," Lincecum said. "I know I'm a picky eater, so that's even harder. When you come into a room and there's nothing but vegetables, you go, 'I'll just have a shake' or something like that. It's just holding yourself accountable and remembering to do stuff.

"Last year I'd eat anything I wanted and I didn't even care. I was like, 'I don't care, I'm fat, I'm thicker than I'm used to being and I'm doing fine.' Then my body started feeling different. My legs started feeling the effects of the 30-plus pounds I'd put on. Anybody putting on 30-plus pounds is going to feel the effect.

"What happened is then I just completely changed it. I don't think that's a smart move either and I don't think the way I got rid of it was smart. I got rid of it way too fast, drastically. My focus became more getting back to my normal weight than pitching, throwing."

And, just because he is beginning to feel his age, that doesn't mean The Freak will start icing his arm ? or any other body part for that matter ? any time soon.

"I don't know," he said. "I don't think my dad would agree with that."

97% Monsieur Lazhar

All Critics (93) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (90) | Rotten (3) | DVD (1)

A gentle film can still be searing in its effect on an audience, something that "Monsieur Lazhar" proves emphatically.

With a few folds, this story could have made a script for John Barrymore, like Topaze, or for Chaplin.

A sad, reflective study of the possibilities, and the impossibilities, inherent in the teacher-student relationship.

"Monsieur Lazhar" is good. Really good.

The film is rich in naturalistic, tossed-off details.

A standard liberal tale about an inspirational teacher gradually deepens into a quiet study of how grief works its way through a community.

Falardeau's adaptation of fellow Qu?b?cois Evelyne de la Cheneli?re's play honours the power of the written word (a motif reinforced throughout the film), and expands on its stage origins via remarkably-assured cinematic touches.

Falardeau dances delicately along the razor's edge of the familiar and the conventional. But he does so with tact and taste and just the right blend of tension and relief.

This moving film features exquisite performances by Fellag and a stunning ensemble of child actors. The movie also gets high marks in cinematography, sound, original musical score and editing.

Although it raises timeless questions about life and loss, and timely ones about mentorship and multiculturalism, "Monsieur Lazhar" would rather teach than preach.

... the perfect school drama for people who hate the Hollywood version of the genre, but are open to simple and moving stories about people doing the best they can in a world that doesn't always seem to encourage that approach.

A humanistic story about how tragedy has different effects on people.

a naturalistic ensemble drama about the possibilities - and the limitations - of the teacher-pupil relationship ... probably too low-key for mainstream multiplex tastes, Monsieur Lazhar is a temperate, generous and deeply affecting experience.

As the teacher, Fellag suggests Robert Downey Jr. channeling a quietly reflective Robert De Niro.

This is a good movie about teaching, but more importantly, a good movie about the loss of a loved one and how to cope with death.

There's a lighthearted inspiration infused throughout Monsieur Lazhar that makes it also touching, but never maudlin.

Everything about the film sets exactly the right tone, from the unforced and winning performances by the main children to the wintry cinematography to Fellag's quietly rueful performance.

The rare sort of movie that chooses not to focus on the dramatic, pivotal moments that happen in life, but what comes after.

One of the most touching films of the year. A brilliant tragedy that transcends boundaries of age, country, race, religion and gender.

tender and sincere, frequently striking a fine balance between the dictates of the "inspirational teacher" genre and a more mundane kind of realism that tamps down easy sentimentality and strives for something more organic and genuine

Takes the fairly dreadful 'teacher who makes a difference' sub-genre and puts an interesting new spin on it that gives it the allure of something fresh.

Some teachers will learn from it. All teachers will find it a reaffirmation of their vocation.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging, deservedly Oscar-nominated drama with a terrific central performance from Mohamed Sa?d Fellag.

Cricket: Customers 'Waiting at the Door' For Prepaid iPhone

Apple iPhone 4S (Verizon Wireless)

Just as planned, Cricket Communications has become the first prepaid carrier in the U.S. to offer the Apple iPhone.

Cricket, a subsidiary of Leap Wireless, began selling the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S to prepaid customers in its stores and through select dealers Friday morning with its $55 per month, unlimited talk, text, and data plan. Cricket customers were eager to get their hands on the prepaid iPhone, the company said.

"So far, customer activity has been brisk with customers waiting at the door as the stores opened," a Cricket spokesman told PCMag in an email.

Cricket late last month announced it would be offering the iPhone to customers without a contract. On Cricket's plan, the 16GB iPhone 4S is available for $499.99 and the 8GB iPhone 4 is available for $399.99. Both come in black or white.

"Launching iPhone is a major milestone for us and we are proud to offer iPhone customers attractive nationwide coverage, a robust 3G data network and a value-packed, no-contract plan," Doug Hutcheson, president and CEO of Leap, said in a statement last month.

Cricket is first prepaid carrier to nab the iPhone but it isn't the only one. Sprint's Virgin Mobile USA division will also begin offering the iPhone on a pay-as-you-go basis, starting on June 29.

T-Mobile is currently the only one of the four major U.S. carriers that does not yet have the iPhone, due to network incompatibilities. Sprint jumped on board with the release of the iPhone 4S, joining Verizon and AT&T as Apple partners.

In April, a number of regional carriers landed the coveted Apple smartphone, including nTelos, Cellcom, and GCI.

Dr. Ayshe Talay-Ongan: Falling in Love at First Sight: Falling Is the Easy Part

Falling in love is the Holy Grail and part and parcel of marriage in Western cultures. How many times over the years have we seen images of young women, mostly on TV and in the movies, telling their friends and family that they are in love with stars and pixie dust in their eyes? Plus, we are inundated with the expectation that when one is in love, marriage is justified; in fact, we fall in love and we get married, right? Well, obviously something is amiss in this scenario -- just look at the divorce rates!

First, this notion of falling in love and uniting lives based on romantic love is a relatively new one. Throughout history, if we look at how marriages took place, we see that they were mostly arranged unions, propelled by status, monetary benefit or similar advantage to the families of the future partners. Marriage then was a logical, sensible, strategic partnership. A maiden's heart may still have fluttered at the sight of a certain dashing young man, to be sure -- after all, falling in love is the essence of our humanity -- but marriage because of falling in love? Very rare and quite unlikely.

So first we, as contemporary Western women, should count our blessings for not being forced into unions that we may have loathed. Let us stop and consider that in many cultures around the globe, women are still seen as a commodity to be used and abused. That for many women, pursuit of happiness is not a right, but a fantasy.

Secondly, let us take a closer look at falling in love. Think about the very first boy who took your breath away; that kid that you just could not stop thinking about... was that falling in love? And how many times has that happened to us since? Here's my point: We probably fall in love quite a few times and it starts from our childhood. As we mature, our criteria for "marriage material" men also evolve and change. We may think that a guy is hot, even take him to bed, but few women would stake their lives on looks or sex alone.

So then, to the point: Is it possible to fall in love on first sight? The answer is, yes, but even such a 'thunderbolt' could not be sustained unless a woman's intuition, topped with her increasing knowledge of the character of that person, were at play. When women sense a certain depth of character, feelings of compassion and empathy and genuineness in the person they were swept away by, they start paying attention to that relationship, and begin nurturing it. So love at first sight may slowly evolve into a relationship.

Falling in love with the worthy other is like being entrusted with the rarest, most beautiful orchid. It needs deepening knowledge of one another to sustain it. It needs growing, compassionate and empathic friendship to walk in each other's shoes to support it. It needs mutual freedom and respect to breathe in so it can flourish. It needs not just one day, one week, one month, but years to mellow and gain depth of flavor that makes the happiness it generates essential to the couple's existence -- indeed, like good wine or ripened cheese that is a feast for the palate. It cannot be taken for granted, because it will wilt away. And a sad dry twig is no orchid.

Remaining in love is hard work that comes easy if it's the real thing. If anything that's worth doing is worth doing well, then loving well is worth the world.
