"Now we've got them eating, we've got them talking about food, we've got them wanting to cook and wanting to go out more and recognizing chefs and recognizing how much great work they do, now we can sort of educate them on what they're actually eating," Simmons said Saturday during an interview at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.
Simmons said the next step in the evolution of reality food television will be providing programing that educates people about the connections between food and the many problems facing the country, from education to poverty to hunger.
"I would like to think that is where we could go with it," said Simmons, whose recently released book, "Talking with My Mouth Full," chronicles her rise in the world of food television.
"The problem is, and this is always the truth, television is entertainment. It's about entertainment. It needs to be fun. It needs to be an escape. So how do you make smart TV about food that is also really fun and interesting and that you can get people excited about? That's kind of my dream about what I'd like to do."

New education bill AB110?takes?funding for special-education services and educators from public schools, allows voucher schools to hire non-certified special-education teachers and services, and does not provide suitable?funding to address the needs of moderately to severely disabled students.?Skip to the bottom of this message for a call to action, or keep reading for more details on this fast-tracked legislation. AB 110?degrades?the quality of special education for students in public and voucher schools.
Background: This past fall, AB110 was introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly. During the public hearing, all disability groups in Wisconsin opposed the bill. Legislators from both sides of the aisle recognized that this bill would not pass.?Rep. Litjens, the sponsor of AB 110, has submitted a rewritten version.?Disability groups in Wisconsin continue to oppose it for?many reasons ??described below. The biggest problem: the bill does not require private schools to have any special educators or related services expertise (e.g.,therapists) on staff. Sen. Vukmir has introduced the same bill in the Senate as SB 486.?AB 110 will be voted on by the Assembly Education committee?TOMORROW @ 10 AM. No testimony is taken during this hearing. Although no official announcement has been made, it looks like SB 486 will have a hearing during the afternoon of Feb. 28th.
The funding mechanism in AB110/SB486?is highly problematic:
- Wisconsin does not fund special education students on a per pupil basis. AB110 does does, withdrawing per-pupil funding for collectively used services such as teachers, aides and therapists, from public schools, making it more likely that special-education students in public schools will no longer receive the services they need.
- The bill does not provide a tuition cap: students with moderate to severe needs will not receive a voucher?that?covers?the full cost of their education.
This will have three negative effects:
??????????These students will be unlikely to find voucher schools that will serve them for the amount of their voucher.
??????????The voucher program will likely appeal to families whose children have less complex disabilities, leaving?increasingly underfunded?public schools?with a higher proportion of students?with the most complex needs.
??????????Low- and possibly moderate- income families who seek to attend a private school which has a tuition higher than the voucher amount will be unable to use the voucher, resulting in vouchers simply serving to subsidize families who can already afford to send their children to private school, rather than giving the monetary choice to families who cannot afford to do so.
While disability groups appreciate the reference to implementing the child?s most recent IEP, that reference becomes less relevant the longer the child remains in the private school (which the bill gives them a right to do through graduation or age 21 whichever comes first). In addition, there are no legal rights that go with that obligation. In other words, what happens if the child?s IEP is not implemented? The bill provides no remedy for that. Finally, as pointed in in point 4, below, without special educators on staff, how can parents have any confidence that private schools can actually implement their children?s IEPs?
This new bill does not require private schools to use DPI certified special educators or service providers.

"The RAD51 gene was already known to the scientific community as a potential catalyst for certain types of cancer and in problems of resistance to chemotherapy", explains Emmanuel Flamand-Roze. "So we wondered whether it had yet another function that could explain the motor symptoms of CMM disease".
In humans, the motor system is a cross-control system, which means that the left side of the brain controls the motor functions of the right side of the body and vice versa, with the cross-over taking place at the brainstem. While studying the expression of the RAD51 protein during development of the motor system in mice, the research scientists discovered that this gene could be implanted into the cross-over of the motor network that links the brain to the spinal fluid at the brainstem.
This discovery opens up a whole new field of investigation into the development of the motor system and to achieving better understanding of the cerebral mechanisms that control bimanual motricity. It could also shed light on other motricity disorders related to fine movement organization, such as dystonia or certain genetic neurodevelopmental diseases.

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras ? A fire started by an inmate tore through an overcrowded prison in Honduras, burning and suffocating screaming men in their locked cells as rescuers desperately searched for keys. As many as 300 people were killed in the world's deadliest prison fire in eight decades.
The local governor, who was once a prison employee, told reporters Wednesday that an inmate called her moments before the blaze broke out and screamed: "I will set this place on fire and we are all going to die!"
Comayagua Gov. Paola Castro said she called the Red Cross and fire brigade immediately. But firefighters said they were kept outside for half an hour by guards who fired their guns in the air, thinking they had a riot or a breakout on their hands.
Officials have long had little control over conditions inside many Honduran prisons, where inmates have largely unfettered access to cell phones and other contraband.
Survivors told investigators the unidentified inmate yelled "We will all die here!" as he lit fire to his bedding late Tuesday night in the prison in the central town of Comayagua, north of the capital of Tegucigalpa. The lockup housed people convicted of serious crimes such as homicide and armed robbery.
The blaze spread within minutes, killing about 100 inmates in their cells as firefighters struggled to find officials who had keys, Comayagua fire department spokesman Josue Garcia said.
"We couldn't get them out because we didn't have the keys and couldn't find the guards who had them," Garcia said.
Other prisoners were set free by guards but died from the flames or smoke as they tried to flee into the fields surrounding the facility, where prisoners grew corn and beans on a state-run farm.
Rescuers carried shirtless, semiconscious prisoners from the prison by their arms and legs. One hauled a victim away by piggyback.
Comayagua, which houses members of the nation's largest gangs, was built in the 1940s for 400 inmates, but its population had more than doubled to 852, with only 100 guards to maintain order. Unlike U.S. prisons, where locks can be released automatically in an emergency, Honduran prisons are infamous for being old, overcrowded hotbeds of conflict and crime.
Survivor Ever Lopez, 24, who was serving time for homicide, said he was sleeping when the fire broke out about 11 p.m.
"I saw the smoke from cell block 6 and it spread throughout the prison," he said. "The other prisoners and I broke through the roof with our bare hands and fled. Thank God I'm alive."
Officials said 272 people were confirmed dead, but many prisoners were unaccounted for and the death toll could go to 300 or more. Among the dead were six prisoners who drowned after trying to seek refuge in a water tank. There were 852 people in the prison at the time of the blaze.
A prisoner identified as Silverio Aguilar told HRN Radio that he first knew something was wrong when he heard a scream of "Fire! Fire!"
"For a while, nobody listened. But after a few minutes, which seemed like an eternity, a guard appeared with keys and let us out," he said.
He said there were 60 prisoners packed into his cell.
National prison system director Danilo Orellana defended the guards' decision to keep firefighters out as flames lit up the night sky.
"The guards first thought they had a prison break, so they followed the law saying no one could enter to prevent unnecessary deaths," he said.
Honduran President Porfirio Lobo said on national television that he had suspended the country's top penal officials, including Orellana, and would request international assistance in carrying out a thorough investigation.
"This is a day of profound sadness," Lobo said.
Outraged relatives of dead inmates tried to storm the gates of the prison Wednesday morning to recover the remains of their loves ones, witnesses told The Associated Press. The crowds were driven back by police officers firing tear gas.
Channel 5 television showed dozens of inmates' relatives hurling rocks at officers.
"We want to see the body," shouted Juan Martinez, whose son was reported dead. "We'll be here until we get to do that."
Orellana said the convicts were allowed to work outdoors, unlike those held in a maximum-security facility for the country's most dangerous prisoners in the capital, Tegucigalpa.
Located in the middle of irrigated fields and several large ponds, the prison was comprised of eight buildings set close together, with an open, dirt prison yard within a central compound. A single dirt road led into the facility, which has a soccer field on the property.
Honduras has one of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and its overcrowded and dilapidated prisons have been hit by a string of deadly riots and fires in recent years. Officials have repeatedly pledged to improve conditions, only to say they don't have sufficient funds.
Tuesday's blaze was the world's deadliest prison fire since 1930, when 322 prisoners were killed in Ohio.
The U.S. State Department has criticized Honduras for "harsh prison conditions" and violence against detainees.
A 2004 fire at a state prison north of the Honduran capital killed more than 100 incarcerated gang members. A fire a year earlier at a nearby facility killed 70 gang members. And in 1994, a fire sparked by an overheated refrigerator motor in an overcrowded Honduras prison killed 103 people.
Honduran authorities have repeatedly pledged to improve conditions, but human rights groups say little has been done in the country of 7.6 million people, a major transit route for drugs headed from South America to the United States.
"This is a problem that's existed for a long time and the solutions haven't been applied. But now we have to do something even though we don't have the money," Security Minister Pompeyo Bonilla told reporters.
The U.S. sent help from a base at Soto Cano Air Base, about 15 minutes from the prison.
U.S. Military Staff Sgt. Bryan Franks said smoke was no longer visible above the city, and that his team included four vehicles made up of a 10-man medical team, security guards and firefighters.
Hundreds of relatives rushed to Santa Teresa Hospital in Comayagua state to learn the fate of their loved ones, fire chief Leonel Silva said.
Lucy Marder, chief of forensic medicine for the prosecutor's office, said she believed the death toll would rise and it would take at least three months to identify victims, some burned beyond recognition, because DNA tests will be required.
Honduras has 24 prisons, 23 for men or both genders, and one exclusively for women. In December, the total prison population was 11,846 of which 411 were women.

House Speaker Boehner sees payroll tax vote this week (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A tentative deal to renew a payroll tax cut through the rest of this year likely will be finalized and voted on by the House of Representatives by the end of the week, House Speaker John Boehner said on Wednesday.
Representative Kevin McCarthy, the No. 3 House Republican, told Reuters that if a bipartisan negotiating panel signs off on the deal, as is anticipated, there will be enough votes in the House to pass it.
The proposed deal would extend a payroll tax cut for 160 million U.S. workers, extend jobless benefits for millions of others and prevent deep cuts in payments to doctors who treat elderly Medicare patients.
Speaking with reporters following a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, Boehner said, "I do expect, if the agreement comes together -- like I expect it will -- the House should vote this week."
"There is an agreement in principle," Boehner added. "But there are a lot of details that are yet to be worked out. I'm hopeful that will be wrapped up today."
McCarthy noted that traditionally when House and Senate negotiators agree on a deal, it enjoys broad bipartisan support in both chambers.
"If everybody (negotiators) signs it, I would expect it to be able to go through" the House, McCarthy said.

In a new study, ?The Old Pueblo? topped a list of the 10 happiest winter travel destinations in the U.S. It was joined, in descending order, by:

- Los Angeles
- Palm Springs, Calif.
- Washington, D.C.
- Las Vegas
- Houston
The study was commissioned by Hilton HHonors, the company's loyalty program. Hilton Worldwide, to the surprise of no one, has multiple properties in each destination.
?People are indoors a lot during the winter and Seasonal Affective Disorder [SAD] is prevalent,? said happiness expert Aymee Coget, CEO of the American Happiness Association, who teamed up with Hilton. Travel, she said, can be the antidote to ?the moody blues.?
?Being outdoors helps people be happier,? she told msnbc.com. ?Sunshine helps because of the Vitamin D.?
It?s hardly surprising then that the list is dominated by sunny southern destinations. Selected by Sperling?s Best Places, they were judged in several categories, including relaxation, nature, average winter temperatures and number of sunny days per year.
Those criteria were augmented by more urban amenities, including the number of restaurants and bars, cultural institutions and, for some reason, ice cream shops. We?re not sure of the science involved but do have to admit that a big bowl of Chunky Monkey certainly makes us happy.
The latter set of criteria may also explain how Seattle and Washington, D.C. ? not exactly warm and sunny winter destinations the last time we checked ? made the list.

However, according to a 2010 study published in Applied Research in Quality of Life, the biggest boost isn?t generated by the travel per se but rather the anticipation of it.

The Copper Bullets, or Chipolopolo as the national team is called, descended from the plane to meet ecstatic fans and show off the African Cup of Nations trophy that has eluded the southern African nation for more than 30 years.
"Go Zambia, go!" the crowd roared.
The players were driven off on the backs of army trucks, on roads packed with cheering Zambians, to the showgrounds where speeches and a concert are planned.
Zambia beat favorites Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties in a nerve-racking upset Sunday at the African Cup finals in Libreville, Gabon.
Many attributed the victory to an amazing team spirit from a crew that fielded only one international player.
Zambia were the underrated underdogs at the African tournament, much like their country, which boasts a thriving democracy, a less-traveled destination for African wildlife and the spectacular Victoria Falls ? along with a booming copper industry that recently catapulted the country to the status of lower middle-income.

Striker Emmanuel Mayuka said, "I just wanted to finish what they failed to finish," referring to the team that perished.
Bwalya is the only surviving member of that team, escaping the crash because he was flying from Europe.
"The pain of that crash still lingers and we must all remember that those players perished while trying to achieve victory and honor for our beloved country," former President Rupiah Banda declared before he departed with a government delegation Sunday.
The players had vowed to win the 2012 championship to appease the souls of a lost generation of football stars.
Back in 1993, state broadcasters interrupted normal programming to announce the crash in the eight languages spoken in Zambia. In Lusaka, the capital, men and women wept in offices and on the streets.
On Monday, there were only cheers.
Zambians poured out of their houses, clubs and bars to celebrate in the streets early Monday, defying Police Minister Kennedy Sakeni, who said there would be no reason for people to leave their homes to celebrate.
"It is a dream come true," said David Phiri, a plumber. Then he blew hard on his vuvuzela, the piercing trumpet heard around the world during broadcasts from the World Cup in neighboring South Africa in 2010.
Jubilant Zambians also honked the horns of cars draped in their flag, shouted from windows and sang football songs.
"It was written in the stars that we will be the champions," Winfreda Muyunda said breathlessly as she ran out to join a street party that had converged in front of a Lusaka police station.
In the lead-up to the final, Zambians at home and abroad rejected predictions that Ivory Coast would be too strong for their Chipolopolo. Traders have done a roaring business in shirts, scarves, caps and traditional cotton wrappers known as chitenge in national colors, as well as national flags.
At least two planeloads of football fans took off from Lusaka early Sunday for Libreville.
President Michael Sata gave Scott the honor of representing his government at the final. Scott was accompanied by Kenneth Kaunda, who led Zambia to independence from Britain in 1964 and was its president for 27 years, and Sata's predecessor, Banda.
