The state of all economies around the world means your business negotiating has to be in top form. Anything less than powerful and effective can mean failure and possibly bankruptcy. So many businesses, and other situations, rely on people blindly accepting what they are told. It?s rare for the person with whom you are negotiating to question authority. Most of the time there are going to be internal questions that don?t get brought up or addressed. Within reason, you must be willing and able to address everything and anything. During negotiations, you can do this very easily and in a way that is not offensive. You need to be prepared to deal with attacks (subtle and not) upon the trust you have with the other person. If such an attack succeeds, or you cannot think of what to say, then you can be put on the defensive and this perceived slight used against you.

If you want your negotiations to be successful you must possess a strong sense of mental discipline. Every person is going to worry about his or her own problems. This is totally natural. What you need to do is focus on the problems of the other side. Before you start negotiating with someone, you need to figure out their problems so that you can do some research before you sit down at the table. You will learn about a variety of pressures that you can use to your benefit during the process. It doesn?t matter what you might be dealing with, they too have issues and problems. That?s when you need to pay attention to your sense of discipline. If you fail to do this, then you will not be thinking positively or keeping your eye on the ball. The things that worry you become distractions upon which the other side will easily pray. If you are open to trying new marketing/advertising ideas, then seriously consider anything new you come across because new ideas are everywhere.

However, as strange as it may sound not all marketers want to take their businesses to higher levels of performance. A typical example of this is an offer that is in a range of different numbers. For example: an offer that falls between two different figures and numbers. Vague or unclear offers like this force you to acquiesce to things that you don?t yet understand. Respond with a number or figure or offer that actually works for you (whatever the situation might be). A negotiation must include an agreement upon something specific, not upon vague offers to be ?figured out? later. It is important that, with any negotiation that you do, that you have the right perspective. If you want the negotiations to succeed, especially in your favor, avoid emotional bonding at all costs. Your goal is to do a business negotiation, not chitchat with people on a personal level. Remember that any small talk is usually the other person trying to take advantage of you in some way without you realizing it.
